Buffalo mass shooting 10 Reported dead as police investigate manifesto
Buffalo, New York, police say 10 people are dead and a suspect is in custody after a gunman with a rifle and body armor opened fire at a supermarket in the city.
The shooting Took place at Tops in the 1200 block of Jefferson Avenue.
“This was pure evil,” said Erie County Sheriff John Garcia in a press conference on Saturday. “It was straight up racially motivated hate crime from somebody outside of our community.”
Payton Gendron of Broome County, New York, was arraigned and charged with murder in the first degree on Saturday, to which he pleaded not guilty.
In addition to the 10 who were killed, a group that included a retired Buffalo police officer working as a security guard, another three suffered non-lethal injuries.
Investigators are looking into whether the alleged shooter livestreamed the massacre and posted a white supremacist manifesto online.
The suspect is an 18-year-old white male who came from another county in New York state, officials said.
Local, state, and federal officials said they were monitoring the situation and assisting with the investigation.
Police got Buffalo suspect to drop gun at last minute
Police were able to convict the suspected Buffalo supermarket shooter to drop his weapon without harming him, according to officials.
Officers surrounded the individual in the vestibule of the Tops store, where the alleged shooter began pointing his weapon at his own neck, police said at a press conference on Saturday.
The individual, identified as an 18-year-old white male from a New York county outside of Buffalo, then dropped his weapon and body armor before surrendering, they said.

Civil rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton is calling on the White House to host a multi-racial summit about hate violence, after a mass shooting in Buffalo killed 10 people.
“President Biden should have a White House meeting of Black, Jewish, and Asian leaders to underscore the Federal government’s escalating it’s efforts against hate crimes!” Mr Sharpton wrote on social media on Saturday.

Buffalo shooting suspect wrote racial slur on gun: unverified photo
The man who killed 10 people in a mass shooting at a Buffalo, New York, supermarket on Saturday wrote a racial slur for Black people on the sights of his gun, according to unverified images of the massacre circulating on social media.
Officials have said they are investigating the shooting, which the suspect livestreamed, as a hate crime and posess evidence that supports this line of inquiry, but haven’t gone into specifics.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump posted a photo, allegedly from the livestream, showing the weapon with the slur.
“NO question of motive… he wrote it on his assault rifle!!” Mr Crump wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

Payton Gendron of Conklin, New York, is reportedly the main suspect in the Saturday mass shooting at a super market in Buffalo that killed 10, the Associated Press reportedciting anonymous law enforcement sources.
So far, officials have only publicly confirmed that an 18-year-old white male from outside of Buffalo is in custody as the main suspect.
Conklin lies about 200 miles southeast of Buffalo.
